The Jeep Renegade ConceptIt seems that ex-Toyota man, Jim Press, a key figure behind Toyota's hybrid cars, has brought some hybrid mojo to Chrsyler. Despite a lack of public statements regarding progress, it seems Chrysler has quietly been working on technology for both plug-in hybrid vehicles and electric vehicles.
At the last Detroit Auto Show, Chrysler showed off 3 prototypes intended to use such technologies, but all 3 seemed very conceptual. Since, Chrsyler has had little to say about progress or intentions regarding these concepts.
However, very recently Chrysler has been showing some dealers early versions of a plug-in hybrid produced by Chrysler's Envi Unit, a new division dedicated towards hybrid and electric drive vehicles. Press told reporters that the vehicle can achieve 0 to 60 in less than 4 seconds and offers a range of 300 miles. Oddly, he also noted the technology would be particularly useful for off-road vehicles.
While this progress is good news, don't expect any such vehicle to hit the streets for at least 3 to 5 years.
